Doing Qualitative Social Research: Procedures and Good Practice

Prof. Bauer will take the following authors as a framework for his lecture and also hint at some further developments regarding introspective methods (texts are available from the HGGS):

  • newer computer-support language, see Goddard et al (2025), and Deterding et al (2021)
  • a discussion piece on doing interview analysis with LLM [Geicke et al 2024)
  • on mixed methods, see Gillespie et al (2024)
  • on good practice indicators for qualitative research, see Treacy (2010) and APA (2018), O'Connor et al (2020)
  • on reflexivity, see Jamieson (2022),
  • on new procedures, see Allan (2022) on smell walks. 

Participants are also invited to familiarize themselves with the Handbook on Qualitative Researching with Text, Image and Sound, edited by Martin W. About Prof. Martin W. Bauer

Martin W. Bauer is Professor of Social Psychology and Research Methodology in the Department of Psychological and Behavioural Science at the London School of Economics (LSE). He was Head of the Department of Methodology at LSE (2008-2010), and a former Editor-in-Chief of the international journal Public Understanding of Science (2009-2016). He is also a regular academic visitor in Brazil (Porto Alegre, Campinas and Rio) and recently also to China, where he co-directs the Centre for Study of Science Cultures, an LSE-NAIS-Tsinghua University venture in Beijing. Prof. Bauer is also an International Fellow of 'acatech' (German Academic of Technical Sciences).

His research focus is the relationship between science and common sense (‘sensus communis’) through theoretical elaboration and comparative research using national surveys, mass media monitoring and also qualitative enquires. He analysed public controversies over Biotechnology in the 1990s, and he is currently working with colleagues across Europe, India, China, Africa, North and South America on a global database to construct indicators of local 'science cultures' (www.macas-project.com/ & www.MORE-PE.com/). He is a member of the scientific committee of PCST (www.pcst.co/). His papers appeared in Nature, Science, Nature-Biotechnology, Public Understanding of Science, Genetics & Society, SSS, IJPOR, Science Communication and DIOGENE. About Prof. Marta Fanasca

Marta Fanasca obtained her Ph.D in Japanese Studies at the University of Manchester in 2019
investigating the phenomenon of dansō (FtM crossdresser) escorts in contemporary Japan. After a
Postdoc at the Higher School of Economics, she is currently a Marie Skłodowska Curie Global Fellow
affiliated with the University of Bologna, Hosei University and KU Leuven. Her current research
project focuses on commodification of intimacy and gender performativity, taking as case studies
Japanese services providing commodified emotional and/or sexual intimacy in a female/female
context. Her articles have appeared in Asian Anthropology, Mechademia and Girlhood Studies and her
first monograph, Female Masculinity and the Business of Emotions in Tokyo is published by
Routledge.
