Doctoral Candidate Alexander Reindl

Alexander Reindl is pursuing his doctorate under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Anna Kollatz at the Institute for Islamic Studies. In his dissertation, he examines the caricatures published in the Arabic-language newspaper Ḏū l-Faqār (published in Algiers 1913–1914) and the early articulation of socialist ideas among the Algerian Muslim population that can be monitored in this newspaper. His project questions Eurocentric genealogies of socialism and shows how religious, folkloric and political symbols were woven together forming an independent, locally anchored understanding of social justice and political modernity.

Alexander Reindl previously studied political science and Oriental studies in Erlangen and then completed a first master’s degree in political science with a focus on computational social science at the University of Bamberg. Following his focus on the Middle East, he also completed a second master’s degree in Middle Eastern studies at the University of Heidelberg and the University of Jewish Studies.

Alexander Reindl’s research interests are wide-ranging and lie at the intersection of political intellectual history, institutional research, visual culture, discourse analysis and the history of modernity in the Middle East. Alexander Reindl is a member of the HGGS and the international research group Caricatures and Cartoons in a Global Perspective.“
