HGGS Summer Forum 2024:

Forum June 2024

Call for Papers

The Heidelberger Graduiertenschule für Geistes- und Sozialwissenschaften (HGGS) is seeking experts at various stages in their academic careers (doctoral candidates, postdocs, professors) in inter- and transdisciplinary studies to join us for the 2024 HGGS Forum: Bridges and Crossings, where you have the chance to take part in our engaging and exciting gathering of talented researchers from across the world including a keynote lecture with a world-renowned expert in the field.

Participants will deliver presentations on how various Bridges and Crossings are formed to challenge and navigate the intersections of identity and culture and how research within the humanities, law and social sciences both challenge and embrace bridges and crossings within its own positionality. We welcome submissions from experts in all disciplines and subdisciplines within the humanities and social sciences.

At this year’s forum, we are experimenting with different visions of expressing and communicating scholarly findings. Firstly, participants are free to propose a classical paper presentation of 15 minutes. Alternatively, we are inviting the submission of a flash-talk video presentation of 5 to 7 minutes. Finally, academics are invited to submit any creative output of their research to be compiled in a zine which will be shared at the forum. This includes creative writing (no longer than 750 words), poetry, photography, collage work, or any other creative output the research has delivered.

HGGS will also support 8 scholars with Travel Grants. This will cover train tickets and accommodation and is open to people in Germany and Europe.

We invite applicants to submit an abstract of no more than 300 words for papers of 2500-3000 words in length to the form attached below by Monday, 22 April 2024, along with a short biographical introduction including your name, surname, research interests, subject area, and institutional affiliation where applicable and confirm the way you would like to present your scholarly findings at the forum.

We only require the abstract by this date; the final paper can be submitted after participants have received a formal invitation, which will be sent before Monday 13 May 2024.

We require the participants who wish to submit flash-talk video presentations to send them to us by Monday, 10 June 2024 and Zine content by 22 May 2024 at HGGS-FORUM@hggs.uni-heidelberg.de

The HGGS Forum will take place on Friday, 14 June 2024 (Heidelberg, Germany).

HGGS Summer Forum 2023: "Agency in Time"

What is the relationship between agency and time, and how do they interact in the humanities, law and social sciences? The HGGS Forum 2023 brought together interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary experts from around the world to discuss the increasing importance of these themes in numerous academic disciplines, deepening our understanding of humanities, law and social sciences as a whole. Experts at various stages in their academic careers – doctoral candidates, postdocs, professors – were invited to join us for an exciting day of discussions, breaking down barriers between disciplines and shining a new light on the fascinating interaction of agency and time.

In their presentations on the relationship between agency and time, participants experimented with different visions of expressing and communicating scholarly findings individually or in teams: short papers alternated with video collages and poster presentations. Thanks to the HGGS mobility grants, outstanding external doctoral candidates from other German university and from abroad were invited to join the HGGS Forum 2023 in person.
